Episcopal
Church
of the
Redeemer
Pendleton, Oregon
An infants and toddlers nursery is located in the downstairs Sunday School area adjacent to the classrooms. Redeemer has a full-time nursery attendant who has been trained to care for babies. In addition one extra adult is present at all times in case the attendant needs assistance.
Sunday school classes for children in grades 1 through 5 meet in the basement education area as morning worship begins for adults and older children in the nave upstairs.
Before class begins the classes gather together in the Children's Chapel and play musical instruments and sing children's hymns as well as songs from our church camp: Ascension School Camp and Conference Center. After the music, the Collect for the day is read. The children then adjourn to their classroom to learn.
Redeemer uses the Morehouse Publishing Company's Episcopal Children's Curriculum which is divided into four units: Psalms and Wisdom, Reign of God, Worship, and Church History. This curriculum provides numerous options for teaching the specific lesson: role playing, connecting the lesson with current events in the student's lives, art work and other crafts. At the end of the session the children are asked for prayer requests and then collectively pray for their concerns. The children then rejoin their parents during the Peace portion of the Holy Eucharist service upstairs.
The Best Children's (Unrehearsed) Christmas Pageant Ever
Church of the Redeemer is locally famous for its unrehearsed children's Christmas Pageant. The pageant is part of one of the two Christmas Eve services.
Redeemer children and children of families and friends visiting for the holidays gather in the nave of the church late Christmas Eve afternoon. When the pageant portion of the service begins a narrator reads a prepared script, which retells the Christmas story. The children participate by creating the manger scene piece by piece as the story unfolds.
Each child may volunteer to play a part; props for the characters are handed out at the front of the nave when the children come forward. Some hold up the poles of the manger shelter while others are wise men. Many come forward to be animals: sheep and donkeys and mice. One of the favorite roles, though, is that of the angels; the angel wings and halos are a popular attraction. Mary and baby Jesus are usually a volunteer mother with her baby.
After the pageant the service continues.
The youth of Redeemer have been invited to participate in an ecumenical youth group that currently is meeting at the Presbyterian Church.
Some of the youth also partake of the Wednesday Evening Prayer and potluck, joining their families and friends in this activity.
