Christian Formation
Being a Christian is a life-long journey, but there are certain milestones along
the way that provide an opportunity for each of us to affirm our commitment.
Baptism
Baptism is the sacrament by which we become fully members of the
Body of Christ. Baptism is a celebration of the whole community so,
with rare exceptions, we always perform baptisms as part of our
Sunday Eucharist. Baptism is a time to welcome new members into
the church, but it is also an opportunity for the whole worshipping
community to reaffirm their own baptismal covenant and to commit
to supporting new members in their journey.
Confirmation
Most Episcopalians are baptized as infants and the commitments
made at that time were made by their parents and godparents.
In a series of classes offered by the priest, those seeking
Confirmation have the opportunity to explore the church and the
Christian life in all its fullness. It is at Confirmation that the
mature Christian then has the occasion to publicly reaffirm their
baptismal vows for themselves and to receive the laying on of
hands by the Bishop.
Reaffirmation
For most people there is an ebb and flow to the Christian life.
There are circumstances where someone has been absent from
the church for a period of time or has moved into a new ministry
in the church that they want to publicly recognize their return or
new ministry. Those seeking reaffirmation can participate in the
Confirmation classes and then reaffirm their baptismal vows
when the Bishop comes for Confirmation.
Children's Sunday School and Youth Education Opportunities
Sunday School is available for children in grades one through five. Youth group
and youth camp are options for older children.
Education for Ministry
Education for Ministry is a program of study created by the University of the
South's School of Theology. Every baptized person is called to ministry. As
the emphasis on lay ministry has grown recently, the goal of EfM is to
develop an informed and knowledgeable laity through education. The focus
of the program is on living life as ministry.
Education for Ministry participants study the entire span of the Christian
tradition from the beginning to present times. Emphasis is on learning
about biblical exegesis and interpretation, systematic theology, church
history, ethics, liturgics, and ascetical theology.
The academic side of EfM is only one part of the class. Students gather in
small learning communities and apply their reading to their lives through a
process called Theological Reflection. The group also shares worship
together.
EfM is a four year program. Class members sign up for one year at a time.
Year one covers the Old Testament; year two is about the New Testament.
Year three's emphasis is on church history, and year four presents
theological choices.
For the academic year 2010 - 2011 Redeemer's twelve students will
meet almost weekly from after Round-up in September until the end of
May. In May 2010 five people graduated from the program.

EfM field trip to Trinity Cathedral in Portland to hear The Most Reverend Katherine Jefferts Schori.
